SCLEROSIS MULTIPLEX - REHABILITATION
MULTIPLEX SCLEROSIS
Multiplex sclerosis is a progressive disease, characterized by plaques of brain and spinal code demyelinazation. Frequent remissions and exacerbations characterize the disease. Basically, it is an autoimmune disease, and the genetic as well as climatic factors are important for its genesis; prevalence increases going from the equator to the north. The disease begins gradually with most of the patients (60%), while with the others it appears suddenly. Its first symptoms are usually paresthesia, then spastic muscle weakness and disorders of deeper sensibility. With some patients, the disease starts with neuritis retrobulbaris. Double images, nystagmus, vertigo, intentional tremor, chanting speech and cerebral ataxia appear later. With some patients urinating disorders, partial retention of the urine or periodical incontinence appear when the disease starts, and with some others, they appear in later stages of the disease. Psychological disorders generally characterize later stages of the disease. Today, the diagnosis is made quickly, after exposure of the patient to magnetic resonance. However, therapy did not advance as quickly as diagnostics. Treatments with corticosteroids, immunosuppressive medicines, interferon and other medications did not result adequately successful. Physical therapy and rehabilitation represent an important part in treatment.
There is one rock in the park, in front of the sanatorium with the inscription carved in it: “This is the place where Multiplex Sclerosis was buried, A.V., teacher from Kragujevac.” This might seem strange to somebody inexperienced, but to thousands of those suffering from this disease, to those who, after treatment in this Spa, were able to throw away their canes, crutches and wheelchairs, this rock and its inscription represent the symbol of victory and of a new life. Trepca is their hope, Trepca is the ray of sunshine in the sudden dark they experienced, and it is their second home.
People suffering from this disease have been coming to Trepca for decades, since the end of sixties. This is the only place on the Earth where the treatment of multiplex sclerosis is so successful. Patients from all over the world stayed there. Moreover, thanks to them, Trepca has become famous in remote parts, faraway from this country.
